Preparation for Bed Bug Heat Treatment
Tenant Responsibilities for Pre-Treatment Preparation for the Heat Treatment of Bed Bugs
The heat treatment uses specialized electric heaters to heat the inside of the infested rooms to temperatures exceeding 120 °F in order to kill all stages of bed bugs that may be hiding in the furniture, fixtures, and other belongings. Our pest control specialists can successfully eliminate the entire life cycle of bed bugs, from eggs to adults. The success of any treatment depends on a partnership between the occupant and our pest control specialists, and your help in preparing the home before treatment is critical.
Preparing for Heat Treatment
24 hours prior to treatment, air conditioners should be turned off and, if you are able, turn the heat up. Make arrangements to vacate the premises for 8 to 10 hours on the day of the treatment. In order to get ready for the heat treatment, please do the following things prior to the pest control specialist’s arrival.
Items that MUST be removed before the Treatment are:
- House plants and pets, including fish in aquariums.
- Fresh food – store in refrigerator if possible.
- Foods that may melt, including chocolate, candy, etc.
- Medicines
- Cosmetics
- Wax based items, like: candles, wax figures, oil paintings, etc.
- Any pressurized items: aerosol spray cans, canned drinks, fire extinguishers, oxygen tanks, cleaning products, etc.
- Flammable items: lighters, lamp oil, solvents, gunpowder, ammunition, etc.
- Family heirlooms and irreplaceable items.
- Clear all doorways, we will be bringing in large equipment and need easy access throughout the dwelling.
- Bed frames can be left in place, as these will be moved during the treatment.
- Except for the items mentioned above, please leave everything else in the home in its place… This includes bedding, furniture, televisions, computers, etc. This is important because bed bugs and their eggs can be located anywhere, and this helps us ensure there are no survivors.
- We will assume that any clothing, linens, or blankets in plastic bags have been sent through a dryer.
- Do not place clothing, linens, or blankets in plastic bags, unless heated in a dryer for 30 mins.
- Arrange clothing in closets so there is some space between items hanging from rods or lying on shelves, if possible. This will help evenly distribute the heat.
- Clothing may remain in drawers if not densely packed.
- Any clothing that is removed from the home before the treatment should be placed in a dryer at max heat setting for 40 minutes before returning.
- Any fabric items in suitcase and totes must also be placed in a dryer at max heat setting for 40 mins.
- Gather loose papers and other articles that would be blown around by heater fans and place them in boxes.
- Any powders used previously must be vacuumed up.
- Take down wall-mounted knick-knack shelves, wall hangings, and small pictures.
- Waterbeds must be drained.
- Air mattress must be deflated.
- Unplug all electronics.
After Treatment
Following a successful treatment, your home/business will be bed bug-free! However, some of your belongings may not be exactly where you left them. We may have moved them to ensure an even distribution of heat. Open windows or use fans as needed to reduce heat, and return your items to their appropriate places.
